We presented the ad.

The account guys came back the next day, saying “Client has no budget to shoot and they want a typo ad that says  ‘Tomorrow’s technology has a new address.’ ”

“Fine.” said my CD “Put this one in your books, guys.”

This one was going nowhere. Batteries, plugs, catapults, thumbtacks, rubber bands and, inevitably, mugs of beer were considered and discarded.

Anand, my art partner, finally said “Man, I really have to split. It’s my son’s birthday tomorrow and I haven’t got him a gift. Coming down to the toy store on Brigade Road?”

“Sure.” I replied.

A crazy shoot; one that nearly got me arrested by an irate cop in Jaipur for a) riding a bike without a registration plate and b) riding a bike he’d never seen before.

But, hey, if I didn’t do it then, I may have never done it, ever.

I was moping over a beer at Pecos, my regular pub in Bangalore.

“What’s up, macha? Why so down?” asked Elango, the head waiter, as he got me another mug.

“Man, I’ve got a bass, I’ve got an amp, I think I’ve got the blues, but I don’t have a &*^%$# band!” I groused.

“You’re a copywriter, aren’t you? Write an ad for yourself, then.” was his sage advice.

Thanks, Langs – I even managed to crack a layout.

I’d just joined Ogilvy after a stint handling IBM in Wunderman Cato Johnson, when my Creative Director came around, looking slightly flustered.

“Will you please do this job for TCS, VD?” he said “They’re talking about some techie stuff called ERB, or something of the sort. I have no idea what it’s about, but please get it out of the way.”

Turned out, it was about ants.
